At Szabó Services, we put effort into doing no harm by respecting the limits of coaching. A coach who oversteps their scope does not help their client more. They risk harming them. That is not a gray area.
Not all coaches respect the limits of coaching, or know what to do when they meet them. This is where coaching becomes less effective, and sometimes outright problematic. There are two ways to throw a gutter ball here. Under service the client, or attempt to service them in an area you are unlicensed, unqualified, and uncredentialed to work in. Both fail the client. I chose a third option and appointed Chris Evans, our next Strategic Support Partner, to champion it.
Beyond Coaching
Thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are within a person’s control are where coaching does its most powerful work. Everything else, including other people, medical, and mental health needs, belongs in the hands of someone legitimately qualified. Stretching coaching into territory it was never designed for is not serving the client. It is failing them.
Behind the scenes, Chris and I have spent years investing in relationships with aligned service providers that we’ve integrated into our client services through our Health and Wellness Network. These are people, and providers, we trust with our clients. Our clients are never handed off. They are guided to the people who can meet their needs properly, in a way that increases the effectiveness of our coaching.
Meet Chris Evans
Chris holds an MBA and multiple coaching certifications. She is, by every measure, more formally educated in business and coaching than I am. She has been working with clients through Szabó Services behind the scenes for quite some time, and the clients who have had access to her know exactly what I am talking about.
Chris gets it. She is highly educated and deeply human. She services clients with empathy and never with judgment. She meets people in their hardest moments, the moments that fall outside what coaching alone can address, and she helps them find the resources and services they need to get stronger. She believes in coaching, people, and meeting human needs. She is a significant part of this work. I am proud to have her with me at Szabó Services as our integration specialist.
Integration Specialist
As the last of our strategic support partners to be introduced in this blog series, Chris is our secret weapon. She specializes in recognizing and navigating that which is beyond the coaching scope. Her knowledge and nuance of how to integrate our Health and Wellness Network services is in large part what makes us so successful. She knows how to identify the right providers and how to integrate those services so that everything working on a client’s behalf is working together.
Chris understands the lines and why they exist. She understands when and how to move a client toward the support they actually need, and she does it with the kind of care that comes from years of being on the receiving end of this work herself.
The results our clients experience are not accidental. Chris Evans and our Health and Wellness Network exist to make sure of that.
